Spiking its eponymous Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, this massive volcanic cone that peaks up around the other commanding summits and smoking calderas of the Tengger massif in eastern Java is easily the best-known mountain in Indonesia. And why? Well, it’s a truly beautiful sight to behold – that’s why!
Rising just 2,329 metres above sea level, this mass of metamorphic rock and stone sits adrift in the so-called Segara Wedi (the Sea of Sand), an arid and dusty plane spiked at the centre by a clutch of volcanos. Hikers making the much-trodden trek across this deserted patchwork of fuming steam holes and lunar craters can enjoy fantastic broadsides of Mount Penanjakan, where there are some breathtaking panoramas of the sunrise over Bromo to be had in the morning. Upon reaching the caldera itself, this still-active mount reveals a mass of carved and chiselled magma channels forged by countless eruptions of ash, smoke and lava.
Today, trekking packages to the summit are a real favourite of Mount Bromo tour guides, with some even including trips to the curious Poten temple at the mountain’s base, lunch in a traditional warung and morning tipples of potent Javanese coffee to fuel the adventure.
