Johannesburg also is known as Jozi, Jo'burg or eGoli, is the largest city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng, the wealthiest province in South Africa, having the largest economy of any metropolitan region in Sub-Saharan Africa. The city is one of the 40 largest urban areas in the world and is also the world's largest city not situated on a river, lake, or coastline. While Johannesburg is not officially one of South Africa's three capital cities, it does house the Constitutional Court – South Africa's highest court. The city is the source of a large-scale gold and diamond trade, due to its location on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills. Johannesburg is served by O.R. Tambo International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Africa and a gateway for international air travel to and from the rest of southern Africa.

  • Soweto is an affluent hub for development projects and tourism, opening its doors to the world in an attempt to showcase its vibrant social life, renowned for its music and arts. The township's name is an English abbreviation for South Western Townships, which refers to its origins as a Black township under South Africa's Apartheid government. The population has historically been overwhelmingly Black, and some of the watershed events in the struggle against Apartheid occurred in the township. Formerly a separate district, it is now incorporated in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

  • The exhibits were organised and created by a team of curators, filmmakers, historians, and designers to include film footage, photographs, text panels, and artefacts. A series of 22 separate exhibition areas lead the visitor sequentially through the prelude to and history of apartheid, including the situation in South Africa post-apartheid.
