The population has historically been overwhelmingly Black, and some of the watershed events in the struggle against Apartheid occurred in the township. Formerly a separate district, it is now incorporated in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

A series of 22 separate exhibition areas lead the visitor sequentially through the prelude to and history of apartheid, including the situation in South Africa post-apartheid.
