Pretty little Perth straddles the bends of the Tay River over the Lomond Hills from Edinburgh. A rich history mingles with a vibrant arts scene amid the galleries and Gothic rises of its centre, while beautiful swathes of Scottish woodland and fells surround the city on all sides – they all combine to make a trip here laden with castle visits, hikes, strong whisky and more. 

The grand crenulated tops of Scone Palace are perhaps the highlight of the town. Perth tour guides can take you to that great monument on the north side of the city, to see where no fewer than 42 Scottish monarchs have been crowned. Along the way, you'll pass other medieval treats, like the Balhousie Castle with its enthralling Black Watch Museum, which has tartan uniforms, weapons and bagpipes from the famous Royal Highlander Regiment. Back in the city centre and Perth brims with whisky tasting spots and hearty Scottish gastropubs. Angus steaks mingle with drams of Perth's own Dewars spirit, while lively farmers markets take place on the squares. There are also loads of independent art showrooms to get through, replete with haunting images of the Highlands and the Lowlands alike.
