    Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery was created in 1968 when the 660 First World War graves at Dar Es Salaam (Ocean Road) Cemetery had to be moved to facilitate the construction of a new road. During the early 1970s, a further 1,000 graves were brought into this site from cemeteries all over Tanzania, where maintenance could no longer be assured. Dar es Salaam War Cemetery now contains 1,764 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, 60 of them unidentified, and 41 from the Second World War, 7 of them unidentified. The 112 war graves of other nationalities, mostly Belgian and German, all date from the First World War.

    The Saint Joseph's Metropolitan Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. One of the most iconic Dar-es salaam buildings located in Sokoine Drive, facing the harbor, close to the White Fathers' House. It was built by the Germans between 1897 and 1902 and consecrated as a Catholic church in 1905.The cathedral is the seat of the Dar es Salaam archdiocese. One of the most notable features of the church are the stained-glass windows behind the altar.

    The Azania Front Lutheran Church is a Lutheran church in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, serving as a cathedral for the local diocese. It is among the most well-known landmarks and tourist attractions of the city. It is in the city center, close to the ocean, facing the harbour. It was built by the German missionaries between 1898 and 1902.

  • Askari Monument expand_more

    The Askari Monument is a statue that is located at a roundabout in Dar-es Salaam connecting Samora Avenue with Maktaba Street. It was built in 1927 as a tribute to the askari soldiers that fought in World War I. The soldier has a rifle with bayonet pointed towards the Dar es Salaam harbor. The statue stands on a stone pedestal. On the narrow sides of the pedestal are plaques with a dedication in Swahili (Arabic and Latin script) and English; on the wide sides of the pedestal are two pictorial plaques showing fighting African soldiers and the Carrier Corps. The English inscription includes "If you fight for your country even if you die your sons will remember your name", which is attributed to Rudyard Kipling.

    It was built in 1974 by the architect Amuli. The market derived its name from the African porters and casual laborers, "the Carrier Corps", of the First World War when the British Army chose the area as their camping site. The market was officially opened in December 1975 by Julius Nyerere, the First President of Tanganyika and later Tanzania.  

  • Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial House expand_more

    This house was built by the First President of Tanganyika in 1959 after his resignation from teaching at St. Francis College, currently known as Pugu Secondary School. This house is among the first residences used by Mwalimu Nyerere during the Tanganyika independence struggle. Plans and independence strategies were launched in this house.

    This open-air museum features a collection of authentically constructed dwellings illustrating traditional life in various parts of Tanzania. Only a few of the Dominant tribes are represented at the museum as there are way too many tribes (over 130) in the country. Traditional tribal dance performances also take place daily.
