Description

Climb up the Rongai Route, the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. Though gaining popularity amongst climbers, this route experiences low traffic. This is preferred by those looking for an alternative to the crowded Marangu Route and also wishing a more remote hike during the rainy season. Experience the incomparable natural beauty on this trek to Mount Kilimanjaro in just 7 days!

Highlights
  • Admire the magnificent views of Kilimanjaro Peak
  • Summit at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa
  • Camp at the savannah zone of Kibo hut
  • Day 1: Nalemoru Gate (1,800m/5,900ft) to Simba Camp (2,600 m/8,400ft) expand_more
    • After an early breakfast in Moshi, drive to Marangu Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park gate for necessary registration formalities, then transfer to Rongai (Nalemoru) Gate (1,800 m/5,900 ft) near the Kenya border.

    • Begin your climb on this unspoilt wilderness route with the Kilimanjaro mountain guide.

    • First day is only a half-day walk.

    Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

  • Day 2: Simba Camp (2,600 m/8,400 ft) to Rongai Second Cave (3,450 m) expand_more
    • Morning walk is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave, (3,450 m), with incredible views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim.

    • After the hot lunch, have free time to rest at the camp or in the afternoon, explore the surrounding area for an acclimatisation walk to Third Cave.

    Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

    • Wake up before midnight in the cover of darkness. Begin a steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags, and a slow but steady pace will take us to the rim of the main crater, Gillman’s 5,685 m.

    • Rest there for a few minutes to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling good can continue slowly to make the three hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
