My Reviews
Genti Proseku
I felt very comfortable with Genti. He is very skilled at engaging my personality, quickly adapting to my interests and questions. He was warm, friendly and informative. Most of our tour was taken up with the Hoxha years in Albania; Genti was able to draw on history and on his own childhood with his family in the 1970s and 1980s and student years in the early 1990s when the Hoxha personality cult was torn down. These are very difficult times to explain when everything you might once have thought was true becomes a lie. Genti speaks good English, has an excellent vocabulary and was able to help me understand this period in Albanian history. I should also add that he is very well informed about other periods in Albanian history. I am confident that any time you get to spend with Genti will be richly rewarded.
Genti Proseku
Genti took me on a walking tour of Tirana, in particular the sites that were associated with Enver Hoxha’s communist dictatorship. Genti was a kid during this cruel dictatorship and a university student when the dictatorship collapsed so he was able to tell me a great deal not only about the recent history of Albania, the way that it was closed off like North Korea is today but he was also able to provide insights about how all this impacted his family and himself. Genti provided a tour that was not only informative but also personal. I will also say that Genti was very pleasant to hang out with for several hours. He spoke English well, was friendly and engaging. I enjoyed our time together. He did a great job.
giulia dobre
I spent a fascinating day with Giulia strolling around Bucharest. I was mostly interested in Ceausescu, the former dictator of Romania and the scars that he and his wife left on the people of Romania. We visited the evidence of the damage that Ceausescu caused; one of the largest buildings in the world to house the bureaucracy of his tyranny and his own family mansion, extravagant and kitschy. But the best part of the tour was Giulia’s insights into how dictatorships persist, through intimidation, murder, propaganda and the fear instilled in citizens. Giulia speaks from first hand experience and I really appreciated our conversation about the ways in which education in communist regimes brings about obedience, apathy and corruption. Giulia is a wonderful guide to Romanian society and culture. I learned so much from her.
Iva Ivanova
I met with Ivanka three separate times, each for a few hours. We focused on art and politics, basically my choices. Ivanka took a lot of care to make sure that the tours were tailored to my interests. There was never a time when I felt she had a routine approach to her tours. She never gave me a spiel, always was engaging, attentive and sincere. She was, as well, really well informed about the historical sites that we visited and the artworks that we saw. And she made it so much more interesting for me by treating it as a conversation as opposed to a lecture. She did a great job. I have no hesitation recommending her to you.
Dejan Gjorgjeski
It was a pleasure to have Dejan show me around Skopje. He’s friendly, good natured, charming and informative. Both Skopje and Macedonia are peculiar places. The country - strictly North Macedonia - has had a very tangled history with its neighbors and Skopje has some peculiar features - strange faux classical revival buildings and more statues than you can shake a stick at. Dejan was able to explain the complicated and fascinating history of nationalism, money and politics that got Skopje where it is. I very much enjoyed his conversation and his stories.
