The charming town of Mestre has been a part of Venice since the 14th century when it used to serve as the republic's main market and the countryside. Despite being less known and less touristy than Venice itself, the town is decorated with interesting landmarks like the Clock Tower in the Main Square, which once belonged to the walls of an ancient castle; the Cinema Excelsior, which is considered an excellent example of Art Nouveau from the early 1920s; and the Duomo with its white facade on the opposite side of the Square, dating all the way back to the 16th century.
