Description
Join me for a virtual walk through the streets of Bielefeld, a German town that peculiarly became famous due to a conspiracy claiming that the town never existed.
We will start from the medieval fortress on a hill of Teutoburger Forest, where you can learn about the foundation of this town and explore the massive 13th-century Sparrenburg Castle walls. Next, we will take a short walk down the hill towards the historical centre, dotted with gothic, neo-baroque and Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) buildings, passing by the Kunsthalle, Bielefeld's modern art museum.Once we reach the gothic part of the city, we will explore the narrow streets around the Alter Markt (Old Market Square), pass by a catholic monastery and a protestant church, and admire the impressive facades of patrician houses.
Towards the end of the tour, we will stop by the Linen Weavers' Monument. At this point, we will delve into the past of this town, whose economy was orbiting around the textile industry. Before finishing our walk at the Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall) and the Bielefeld Theatre, I will tell you more about the story of the conspiracy behind the popular claim that "Bielefeld does not exist".
