Description

An ancient medieval capital, an impregnable prison able to inspire legends for centuries, an international reference point for military and civil cavalry, Olympic city (what Olympics am I referring to?). Pinerolo is all this and much more.
I invite you to follow me exploring its historic center starting from its highest part, with the panoramic view from the late medieval Basilica of San Maurizio square, walking down through its alleys full of history and stories, in the midst of noble palaces and religious buildings.
We will walk down the main medieval street connecting the highest part of town with lower 'borgo', which is now the heart of Pinerolo. We'll admire the three main buildings dating back to the 1400s: Palazzo Acaja, Palazzo del Senato, Palazzo del Vicario.
Our walk will lead us until reaching the spectacular Piazza del Duomo, around the Cathedral dedicated to San Donato, having a look at the lively shops and cafes, some of which still look as elegant they were hundred years ago at the 'Belle Epoque' time.
Princes, Kings, the actual prisoner was known as the Man with the Iron Mask (who could he possibly be?). Cavalry officers have made great and famous this town located in a magnificent position on the westernmost side of Piedmont, on the slopes of the Alps, less than a one hour drive away from the border with France.

Meet your Host
Stefano Ricca

I am born and raised in this northwestern region of Italy: Piemonte, or Piedmont in English, is a large area bordering France and Switzerland, and until a few years back, not sufficiently kept in consideration for vacations or even simply a visit. I firmly believe that on the contrary, this is one of the most interesting places I have ever seen, and not only for our proverbial local pride! I became fond of researching stories and history about my hometown Pinerolo and the region around it. Lots of medieval towns kept their ancient atmosphere intact, centuries-old tradition in winemaking, extremely high quality of food and local products (Slow Food started here, actually), and large extension of nature parks on the alpine range.
In my youth, I spent an academic year in UCG Galway, Ireland, and travelled quite a lot through Europe, also thanks to my other occupation: I'm a musician, and I've had the chance to play as a drummer for many gigs in France and UK, besides Italy of course.
