Description

The Bo Kaap tour in South Africa is one of the most colourful experiences the country has to offer. Therefore, no tour to the mother city (Cape Town) is complete without a walking tour through the colourful wonderland which is Bo Kaap, previously dubbed the Cape Malay Quarter. The area got its name from the people in the area, who are descendants of Malaysian slaves and Indonesian political prisoners brought to the Cape by the Dutch East Indies Company during the 17 century.

Our live-streamed online experience will kick-off from the from Wales Street in-front of the oldest businesses in the area, Rocksole. After nosing around the Atlas spice market and circuiting through the colourful Chiappni Street, Bismillah restaurant, Owaal Masjid which is the first house and mosque in South Africa, we will finish our experience at one of the eight mosques in the small area.

I am a registered cultural tour guide for the Western Cape province, and I have a keen interest in Bo Kaap as it is the birthplace of my father. I have lived in the area for four years after getting married. As a former journalist, I have covered news and sports in the area and am well acquainted with the community.
