Description
Come and join me to experience the charming old town of Bari, its authentic atmosphere and strong religious traditions from the comfort of your own home.
In this Online Experience, we will learn about the ancient history of Bari, first established as a human settlement in pre-historical times and inhabited ever since for its strategic position overlooking the southern Adriatic Sea which still makes it a thoroughfare within the Mediterranean basin. In the Middle Ages, Bari was a major point of departure for the crusaders and the pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. It was also home to many communities of merchants whose influence can still be perceived in the city’s artistic patterns and folk traditions.
Our tour will start from the so-called “Orecchiette Street” where every day local mammas sitting outdoors spend their days stretching the dough and shaping it into little ears of pasta (orecchiette) by hands. Besides admiring their work, this will also be a unique chance to learn how to cook this delicious speciality from them directly! Then we will stroll through the meandering alleyways of the old town to reach the main architectural and cultural highlights of this tour. We will discuss the origins of the Norman-Swabian-Aragoncastle, the Romanesque architecture of the Cathedral and the story of Saint Nicholas/Santa Claus (Father Christmas, indeed!) whose relics have been sheltered and worshipped in the huge homonymous Basilica since 1098. Our farewell spot will be the panoramic ancient walls facing the port, the bustling local fish market, and the Margherita theatre floating on the sea.

Silvia Sesana
I come from the north of Italy, having graduated in Eastern Languages and Literatures at the University of Venice. In Bari, the chief town of Apulia, where I am now settled, I work as a licensed tour guide and an interpreter, speaking Japanese and English. I like to spend my time outside with friends and to explore the region cycling through the countryside and along the sea. I enjoy studying art and history, but whoever gets to know me well, agrees on my best skill: wasting time playing with my cats. I love cycling and walking and cannot imagine my life without either.
