Description

This online experience will take you to the archaeological park of the baths of Antoninus Pius, which was built between 145 AD and 162 AD. Covering an area of 3 hectares, they were considered the third-largest public baths in the Roman Empire after Caracalla and Diocletian in Rome. Apart from the baths, you will also see a Punic Necrópolis dating back to the 6th century BC. It consists of graves dug in the rock for common people and funerary chambers built for rich people. It was considered the house of eternity. These chambers house sarcophagi made of sandstone or cider wood and rich funerary furniture marked by a deep Egyptian influence. That's why we find scarabs and tiny statues of glass paste representing Egyptian gods like Isis, Ptah, and Horus.

The third archaeological site that you will see is a basilica dating back to the Byzantine Period. Built during the 6th Century AD, it consists of a church marked by five naves, a baptistery, a little chapel known as the chapel of the martyrs, and apartments that used to be inhabited by the clergy.

Meet your Host
Abdelkarim Touati

I qualified as a professional tour guide in 1988. Meanwhile, I continued studying history, archaeology, and architecture to improve my abilities for this activity. Five years ago, I became a member of a prestigious organization called the Friends of Carthage, which consists of archaeologists and architects. Being a part of this organization allows me to deepen my knowledge in their specialities. That is why the members of the organization consider me as one of the best lecturer/guides in Carthage. Indeed during the visits made by official delegations, I am authorized by the scholars of the organization to present the archaeological site to them as proof of their trust in me.
