Description
We begin our live-streamed University of Birmingham campus tour at the East gate entrance in front of the Students Union/Guild of Students building. The campus is rather spread out, so we will take a gentle stroll, stopping along the way to look at various buildings and their surroundings. The University of Birmingham is part of the Russell Group also known as the 'Red Brick' universities, and I will explain the background to these terms, the history of the university and its founders.
At Chancellors Court I will show you the Aston Scott building (inside which is the Great Hall where all graduation ceremonies take place) and introduce you to 'Old Joe'. From here we continue to Green Central, a wonderful open space where students can enjoy the outdoors to relax and enjoy the calm atmosphere. Here sits the new library with access to more than 2.7 million books and 1600 digital resources.
Famous as a world-class research University, the University of Birmingham has been at the forefront of many pioneering and innovative programmes including the development of pacemakers and plastic heart valves.
It is also a University with many 'firsts' to its name including:
- First civic University in England
- First to establish a Business School
- First to incorporate a Medical School
- First to offer degrees in Dentistry
During the tour, we will discuss the courses on offer, the student support and well-being services, the wonderful sport and leisure facilities that have recently opened and of course, where students enjoy shopping and socialising.
