Description

This live-streamed, interactive online experience will give you an exciting glimpse into the history of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), especially from the time of the East India Company.

Starting from the historic Writers' Building (which used to be the headquarters of the East India Company back in the day) and the Calcutta High Court, you will walk around the historic district and get to hear interesting anecdotes about the East India Company, how they arrived in Calcutta, how they settled in the city and turned it into the capital of British India. You will also hear stories about Lord Wellesley, who served as the Governor-General of India during that time.
We will then proceed to the awe-inspiring General Post Office, which is also the site where the first Fort William stood before 1864. From here, we will also visit the site of the guardhouse that housed the infamous Black Hole of Calcutta. Another iconic landmark you will get to explore along the way is the Raj Bhavan or the Governor's House. We will also visit the Lal Dighi or Tank Square, which is believed to predate British rule but is, at the same time, also known as the Dalhousie Square.
As we walk by the roadside food stalls and hawkers, then I will brief you about the local life and fare. Finally, we will end the tour in front of the beautiful St. John's Church, a jewel in the hat of this lovely "city of joy".

Mr. Mehra was wonderful. Our family is originally from Kolkata but it has been many years since we last visited. Mr. Mehra very effectively took us back home. Additionally he showed us a Kolkata we never knew about. Through his lens our children learned so much about the colonial past of Kolkata. He was knowledgeable, fun, thorough and detailed. It was a well planned tour and we were amazed at how much information he fit in in one hour. Our family would love to take another tour with Mr. Mehra if offered and would recommend him highly. This is a great tour for anyone interested in the history of India. Usually Kolkata is not on the itinerary of India tour packages. Mr. Mehra can make a difference.
