Travel in Search of Communist Berlin

Let me take you to the heart of East Berlin, the former capital of communist East Germany, and together we will explore its history through famous landmarks and lesser-known sights. On this online tour, I will guide you around Alexanderplatz - one of Berlin’s busiest squares and most popular tourist destinations - to tell the story of how East Germany came to be after World War II, how its ideology is reflected in the architecture and how it came to an end with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Highlights
  • Look at the Marx and Engels Monument
  • See the famous Berlin Television Tower
  • Admire the incredible beauty of Berlin Palace
Description
  • You will see how this part of Berlin was completely rebuilt after being bombed to ruins during WWII and how this has created a rather peculiar mixture of medieval and East German architecture in Nikolaiviertel - the historic heart of Berlin. The tour will also take you past the reconstructed Berlin Palace, and you’ll hear stories of a very different kind of palace that stood here during the days of the Cold War and what remains of it today. You will also have a chance to say hello to the fathers of socialism while walking past the monument of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and see how the attitudes of Berliners towards it have changed throughout time.
  • This tour would not be complete without East Berlin’s main landmark and the number one symbol of communist power - the Berlin Television Tower, the tallest structure in Germany. At the feet of the tower, another famous landmark - the World Clock - awaits us. You will find out how this popular meeting place was also once a place of demonstrations against the communist dictatorship that eventually led to its collapse.
