Track the Bauhaus Architecture of Tel Aviv

My tour of central Tel-Aviv covers the Bauhaus style houses, for which Tel-Aviv became in 2003 a UNESCO world Heritage Site. As well I expound on several topics concerning the local history. We will start the tour near 'Habima' square, home of the national philharmonic orchestra and of the national theatre, and walk first towards the square. I will then walk along Rothchild Boulevard.

Description

In 2003, Tel-Aviv was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its Bauhaus style houses. In this live-streamed interactive Online Experience, you will get to explore these architectural marvels in real-time.

We will begin the tour near 'Habima' square, which is home to the National Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Theatre. From here, we will walk towards the square. We will then walk along Rothchild Boulevard, which is wide and pleasant, offering the best view of the houses we will be looking at. Continuing along this path, we shall plan make 3 short stops along the route and discuss 5 topics:

  • The founding of Tel-Aviv in 1909
  • Baron James Rothchild and his support of the fledgeling Zionist project
  • The social unrest which began in 2011 from the Rothchild Boulevard
  • A short history of the Bauhaus movement
  • How Tel-Aviv became a UNESCO heritage site

In two of the aforementioned instances, we will leave the boulevard and embark on a journey through the side streets, as this specific route offers a better glimpse into the Bauhaus-style houses.

Jonathan Tannhauser

I have been a full-time tourist guide since 2009, guiding groups and individuals throughout Israel. As a resident of Tel-Aviv, I love the Bauhaus buildings that dot the city and have been showing them to tourists a lot. Tel-Aviv is a young and dynamic city; this matches well the modern building style of the Bauhaus, for which the city was recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site.
