Discover every secret behind the Roman spiced wine, drunk thousands of years ago in the middle ages and renaissance. We will take a journey through the history and archeology of wine, talking about the studies on wine including amphorae and commercial routes, and especially the “wine route” which was once popular for cultural exchange, population, and magic.

  • We can drink as an aperitif, as an accompaniment to a meal, for a special party, or as an end of meal/dessert

The first part of this online experience is a historical journey through the art of wine at Pompeii. I will show you which wine gladiators liked to drink, the ones preferred by Julius Caesar, or the classic wine that can be found in the shops of ancient Rome or in Pompeii. I will tell you about wine in the Middle Ages and how it was used for magical and esoteric purposes. We will talk about the wine drunk during the wedding banquets in the Renaissance period. It’s not just history, we will have lots of fun!

We will then move on to prepare together 4 different types of spiced wine from different eras: Mulsum wine (Roman), Granum Paradisi (Roman), Hippocrasso or Hippocratic wine (Middle Ages), Elixir of Youth (Renaissance). We will follow and comment on ancient sources such as Columella, Apicius, or medieval anonymous.

Know before you go

We are going to prepare 4 types of spiced wines based on 250ml each (2 x red, 2 x white). Please arrange the following Ingredients before the tour:

  • Red and white wine (not too sweet wines, not sparkling!)
  • Cinnamon sticks or powder (4 or 25gr)
  • Cloves (12)
  • Fresh ginger or powder
  • Nutmeg
  • Pepper
  • Bay leaf (a few grams or a couple of leaves) 
  • Honey
  • Orange & Lemon peels

Utensils required:

  • Something to measure the quantity of wine
  • Pot or container to mix
  • Tea Spoon
  • 4 empty glass jars to store the wine we make

Ciao! I am an authorized tour guide. I have a first degree in Archaeology and History of Art. Both travels and the experience of living abroad have made me understand how lucky I am to live in Naples! It’s a city with a unique charm, where you can breathe history and art in every corner.     Really had a good time. Rafaelle put together a wonderful presentation explaining all about the history of wine in the region, and followed it up with making different spiced wines using ancient recipes. The wines came out well, and I am sure to use these recipes again!
