Description
On this live-streamed, interactive online experience, we will see the Great Mosque, which was built in AD 851. I will show you its courtyard and tell you about the writings on the wall. I will shed more light on the archaeological aspects of the mosque as you show you the beautifully lit prayer room and the library. You will see the place from where the Imam offers his prayers. If you look closely, you will notice that the mosque does not have a minaret; I will tell you the reason behind that as well.
Later we will proceed to the Ribat; this is the oldest monument in Sousse's medina, built-in 8th century AD as a fort. Porticoes surround the internal courtyard; in the corner is a major (watchtower) added by the Aghlabids in AD 821. I will climb the narrow spiral staircase to reach the top of the fort. From here you can enjoy a birds-eye view of Sousse and the Mediterranean Sea. I will tell you about the military advantages of having the fort, and throughout our experience, I will be sharing tales of wars and conquests from the past.
