Description

With this online experience, we will present to you the figure of the poet Dante Alighieri, and his Divine Comedy through an introductory explanation in English and by listening to the fifth song together in Italian.

The Fifth Canto of Hell is considered the canticle of lovers and is universally recognized as beautiful and exciting not only of the entire Divine Comedy but more generally of the entire Italian poetic tradition. The Fifth Canto of Hell is the song of carnal sinners, those who reason is subjugated by libido, suffocated by lust. In this chaotic storm, Dante's sensitivity is touched by the light flight of two souls flying together; he cannot accept that these two souls suffer in hell for eternity. For this reason, Dante's poetry presents us with the glorification of talent and instinct rather than the glorification of reason, as generally happens in the entire Hell of the Divine Comedy, called to justify the penalty awarded. We witness the triumph of nature expressed in the point of the sexual instinct, which in Paolo and Francesca is actually as light as a feather because, in reality, it is a simple candid kiss.

The poem is recited by me. After the introduction of the song in English and listening to it, you will experience the power of the language of emotions, through the musicality of the verses, even if it's in a different language.

Meet your Host
Mario Gesù Fantacci

I am an environmental economist but in my life, I combined study and research with that of the performer in the artistic field. I am a philanthropist scholar of art history. At the moment I am about to publish my second essay on the iconological significance of the renaissance Sassetti Chapel. I am also passionate about acting; I have implemented my passion as a performer. In fact, I am a professional Florentine art guide and at the same time an actor for Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Before the world stopped, I performed every week in public places such as restaurants and pubs or in private events.
