Description

In this experience, we will discover the hidden traces of the Jews in Genoa from medieval times to the 20th Century. We will start with the previous Jewish ghetto established in the second half of the 17th century, close to the old port area and pass through the narrow alleys of the labyrinth of the old Genoa heading towards De Ferrari Square where we will discover the astonishing history of the Jews in the 19th century and the drama of Second World War up to the Cathedral.
Next, we will visit a neighbourhood called "il Molo" (the old harbour) where Jews have been living in the 18th century and where a small synagogue was built. You will get the chance to visit both the old and the modern Genoa and focus on the documents and historical sources that trace the importance of the Jewish community in Genoa.

The tour will end in front of the synagogue in Bertora street which represents the main point of reference for the Genovese Jewish community. The synagogue was built in a byzantine style in 1935. We will see the synagogue from outside.

I was born in Genoa and I have been a licensed tour guide since 2012. I work and study with devotion to discover the unusual aspects of my city, viewed from a different perspective.
I have a Master’s Degree in Slavic Languages and Literatures (Polish and Russian) and in the nineties, I spent almost ten years living in Russia, Poland, and Israel.

When I came back to Genoa, in early 2000, my growing interest in arts and local history, along with a deep interest in working with people, made me focus on studying jobs related to tourism. I studied once again at university, this time Art History and Local History.
Since 2012, when I became a licensed tour guide, I have been involved in several projects pertaining to the artistic heritage of Genoa, including the Festival of Poetry, the Festival of Science, and tours relating to the Genoese monumental cemetery of Staglieno.

I love to travel with my family, I also developed several family-friendly tours. Throughout my years of humanistic studies, I have developed a passion for Jewish culture. For this reason, I have made a project called “Genoa Unveiled” dedicated to Genoese Jewish cultural sites. Hope to see you soon in Genoa!
