Description

Join me to discover intriguing facts about Celje and its fascinating 2000-year-old history, supplemented by medieval legends about counts and interesting stories from the 19th and 20th centuries as you walk through its streets (well, now I'll do the walking, and you just enjoy).

This Online Experience starts from Krekov Square, where you will see the second oldest hotel in Slovenia, the railway station and the statue of Alma Karlin, the famous Slovenian writer and traveller. We will pass one of the 16 wells used in a medieval town through the city centre to the Tourist Information Centre. At the Main Square, marvel at the remains of a Roman villa, and then walk over to visit the Parish Church of St. Daniel - do you know why he is depicted with a lion? I can not wait to share these stories!

The next part of this interactive walk will take us along the Savinja river. At this point, we will look for the traces of a historically important occupation that no longer exists today. I will then take you to the Lower Castle, a magnificent piece of architecture which served as a residence for all the noble guests who arrived in Cilli on the invitation of Counts of Celje. This erstwhile important European noble family is now almost forgotten, but I can tell you some interesting stories about them. We also had our own Romeo and Juliet before the Italian ones gained popularity - and our love story is real, not fictional!

I will conclude this tour in front of the City Hall, the first public building built by the Slovenian people for Slovenian people.
