Description
This online experience will take you to the archaeological site of Tahai, located on the coast of Hanga Roa in Easter Island. You will see the famous Moai statues on Ahu (ceremonial platforms), caves, ancient houses, and classical Rapa Nui architecture. This tour will cover the most important elements that represent the local culture. The important sites you will see include:
- Rapa Nui National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Hare Moa - ancient chicken houses
- Hare Ma’ea - a modern stone house representation of ancient Rapa Nui architecture built in front of a cave
- Hare Paenga - the original houses you find in all settlements on the Island, famously known as ‘boathouse’
- Dr William Mulloy’s final resting place, the tomb of the famous American archaeologist who restored the site
You will also see the three Ahus: Ahu Vai Uri, with 5 statues that belong to different historical periods, and Ahu Tahai and Ahu Ko Te Riku, with one statue each, along with two broken statues close to Ahu Vai Uri that, belongs to this complex. During the experience, you will get answers to some of the most interesting trivia questions, like when this site was restored, how many statues are there in the complex, and the ideal time to visit Tahai.

Meet your Host
Alejandro Katipare
I have been an active tour guide for the last 4 years and have been associated with the tourism industry my whole life. I hail from a traditional family considered to be at the centre of the original Rapa Nui traditions and ancient knowledge in modern times. We are descendants of the first ruler of our culture, king Hotu Matu’a; he lived 33 generations before mine.
I am also a professional audiovisual producer, and lead musician in a cultural music group called Puku Rangi Tea. We have represented our culture in different international music and art festivals.

My husband and I enjoyed very much to explore the Moai statues of Easter Island. The tour guide Alejandro is a native, for that reason, he could explain very well about their history, and showed us the beautiful Easter Island with those ancient statues, which was really amazing.
Due to covid virus disaster, this is a an option way to travel , especially to visit somewhere is so so far away from where I'm living......

Alejandro Katipare, our tour guide, was amazing, right from the start of the tour till the very end. He ensured first we were all online and were comfortable, checked in where we were from, and really connected with us from the word go.
Clearly, with his heritage, he is very knowledgeable and was able to keep us all engrossed fully with the history of Easter Island and with the many personal anecdotes and details which made us want to hear more. He was also very aware of keeping the engagement and paused to check for questions and was very happy to answer them and really wanted to ensure we had a great experience.

Alejandro gave us a fantastic virtual tour around his homeland. He gave us a wealth of information about their culture and history. We didn't know much at all about Easter Island coming into this and feel much better acquainted now. In the middle of a snowstorm outside where I live, it was a delight to visit Easter Island and see the Moai Statue on my computer. It transported me to the island with 78 degrees and sunny. The guide Alehandro was very knowledgeable. His ancestors for the past several generations were from easter island. So it was a treat listening to him. He talked about how the ancient people lived and how and why they built these statues. He answered my questions. He took his laptop as close to the statues as possibly he could. I took a picture or two online. Overall the hour was spent well and I learned about the rich culture of Easter Island.
I wish we could have visited more than one location, but due to the Internet, that was not possible.
