Explore the Moai Statues of Easter Island

In this activity, we’ll visit an archaeological site called Tahai, located on the coast of Hanga Roa on Easter Island. People can expect to see the famous Moai statues in their Ahu (ceremonial platforms), caves, ancient houses and classical Rapanui architecture. The main reason why I think this place is perfect for an online experience is that it has most of the important elements that represent our culture all together in this place alone. You will be able to see the following:

You will see the famous Moai statues on Ahu (ceremonial platforms), caves, ancient houses, and classical Rapa Nui architecture. This tour will cover the most important elements that represent the local culture. The important sites you will see include:

  • Hare Moa - ancient chicken houses
  • Hare Ma’ea - a modern stone house representation of ancient Rapa Nui architecture built in front of a cave

  • Dr William Mulloy’s final resting place, the tomb of the famous American archaeologist who restored the site

You will also see the three Ahus: Ahu Vai Uri, with 5 statues that belong to different historical periods, and Ahu Tahai and Ahu Ko Te Riku, with one statue each, along with two broken statues close to Ahu Vai Uri that, belongs to this complex. Alejandro Katipare

I have been an active tour guide for the last 4 years and have been associated with the tourism industry my whole life. I hail from a traditional family considered to be at the centre of the original Rapa Nui traditions and ancient knowledge in modern times. We are descendants of the first ruler of our culture, king Hotu Matu’a; he lived 33 generations before mine.

I am also a professional audiovisual producer, and lead musician in a cultural music group called Puku Rangi Tea. We have represented our culture in different international music and art festivals.

I booked this tour for a remote work social event where everyone ordered appropriately themed food to their house, and then got to enjoy an amazing virtual tour of Easter Island.

The sights and views were amazing and Katipare was an awesome host, extremely engaging and knowledgeable. Everybody absolutely loved the event!

My husband and I enjoyed very much to explore the Moai statues of Easter Island. The tour guide Alejandro is a native, for that reason, he could explain very well about their history, and showed us the beautiful Easter Island with those ancient statues, which was really amazing.
Due to covid virus disaster, this is a an option way to travel , especially to visit somewhere is so so far away from where I'm living......

Alejandro Katipare, our tour guide, was amazing, right from the start of the tour till the very end. He ensured first we were all online and were comfortable, checked in where we were from, and really connected with us from the word go.
Clearly, with his heritage, he is very knowledgeable and was able to keep us all engrossed fully with the history of Easter Island and with the many personal anecdotes and details which made us want to hear more. He was also very aware of keeping the engagement and paused to check for questions and was very happy to answer them and really wanted to ensure we had a great experience.
We could definitely look for more such experiences and specifically, very happy to refer Alejandro, to our friends. Of course, we remain hopeful that we will be able to do it in person one of these days.

Alejandro was absolutely brilliant! You are getting a tour by someone whose ancestors were an imperative part of the history of this amazing place! What a rich and interesting history of this amazing place, inhabited by a very intelligent society. Alejandro is very passionate about his birth place and the treasures left by the generations before. He is very friendly and knowledgeable, and there was no question he could not answer! Thank you very much, we will definitely be looking at organising an actual trip to this magical place! :)

Alejandro was a marvelous host and as a descendant of the original inhabitants had insights and observations that helped bring the island's culture alive. I highly recommend this tour.

Alejandro gave us a fantastic virtual tour around his homeland. He gave us a wealth of information about their culture and history. We didn't know much at all about Easter Island coming into this and feel much better acquainted now. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to do some traveling while we can't actually do much traveling!

  • Nataly Essonnier

The interaction with our guide has been excellent. He was very attentive and enthusiastic. The information provided was very interesting. I've learned many things about the culture, history, geography, economy, ... of the island. I spent a very good time. :-)

In the middle of a snowstorm outside where I live, it was a delight to visit Easter Island and see the Moai Statue on my computer. It transported me to the island with 78 degrees and sunny. The guide Alehandro was very knowledgeable. His ancestors for the past several generations were from easter island. So it was a treat listening to him. He talked about how the ancient people lived and how and why they built these statues. He answered my questions. He took his laptop as close to the statues as possibly he could. I took a picture or two online. Overall the hour was spent well and I learned about the rich culture of Easter Island.
I wish we could have visited more than one location, but due to the Internet, that was not possible.

This tour is fantastic. In addition to seeing the statues and platforms, which are fantastic, we learned a lot about the history and culture of the island. Alejandro did a terrific job. He had clearly thought very carefully about how to organize the tour. He is engaging and extremely knowledgeable. Highly recommended!

Alejandro was an excellent tour guide of a fascinating and beautiful archaeological site. This tour was interesting, beautiful and educational. We did the private tour for 10 families with kids ages 4-16 years old - every family said that it was great and that the adults and kids all loved it. I recommend you book Alejandro and be transported through his tour.

  • Brent Becker

This is our fourth family virtual tour with TourHQ and we really enjoyed it. The host's knowledge of the history of the Island and experience in narrating a tour was exceptional. It was great to be on location to see and hear about a place far far away. Well done.
