Description

This Online Experience is designed to provide you with an unforgettable tour of the historical ruins of the Mayan civilisation at Tulum.

We will begin our virtual tour by learning about the Mayan civilization and the role of Tulum as an important trading centre for them. Next, take a look at some of the houses once used by the ruling class of this site, and get to know how and why the Mayan people buried their dead inside their homes. As we explore various archaeological sites, I will help you learn how to tell a Mayan house and temple apart from each other. We will also explore the tiny beach - yes, beach! - where the Mayan people used to unload their boats.

Throughout the tour, I will ensure that your thirst for knowledge on the Mayans is well-quenched: Did you know that the Mayans used chocolate as money? Learn more about this unique currency and how it was employed to confirm marriages. Further, we will explore the curious customs and astrological traditions of the ancient Mayans, and learn why some idols in the ruins are portrayed upside down and how the buildings in the earthly Mayan cities aligned with the heavenly bodies in the skies.

Meet your Host
Hugo Villagomez Villalobos

In the year 1979, when I was still a kid, my family used to live right outside the ruins of Tulum. I saw the archaeologists work and loved to hear the stories they shared when they were eating at my mother's restaurant.
I started by teaching in a junior high school but in the end, I decided to study and become a guide. Since 1985, I have been guiding people all over the Mayan area, Chichen Itza, Palenque, Coba, Ek Balam and many others. I work for Holbrook Travel and Road Scholar. I am proud to say that a year ago the Council of Tulum announced me as the Official Chronicler or Historian of Tulum and next month, we will have a presentation of a book written by me about the highlights of the area.
