Explore Messina, 'The Door Of Sicily'

Messina is an amazing city. Its unique setting on the Straits separating Sicily from Italy inspired a saying: "Messina is the gate to Italy!" Like a Phoenix, it's risen several times after terrible catastrophes and destructions in over 2000 years of history. This is exactly the real "Messinese" spirit: never give up, always fight!

Description

Messina is an amazing city, and Its unique setting on the Straits separating Sicily from Italy inspired a saying: "Messina is the gate to Italy!".
We will start our virtual tour at Port of Messina, showing the entrance to the city. Just across the port is a Marble statue which is a symbol of the city. There are many churches in the town, and while walking, we will come across the Church of the Christ of the King. And, I will talk about interesting legends related to the Strait of Messina, where monsters resided and made it impossible to cross it.
Then, we will reach the historical centre which houses the Cathedral of Messina. Next to the Cathedral is the building of the Zodiac, where a band of beautiful paintings showcase the different Zodiac signs. See the unique bell tower, which was added after the earthquake as the original was destroyed. It is decorated with golden statutes and has the largest Astronomical clock in Europe. The Cathedral was also rebuilt after the earthquake, and the interiors are fairly simple with a beautiful golden altar. Outside the Cathedral is a Renaissance fountain which has 4 statues representing 4 rivers.
Next, we will stroll through the pedestrian area with cafes and beautiful old buildings to reach the Bronze statue of the city's saviour in the battle against the Turkish Army. Our next leg of the tour is a small church that survived the earthquake in the 13th century. Then, we will continue our walk from the main road, which until the 17th century marked the entrance to the street. While walking on this road, get to know about the local cuisine. And, we will exchange our final goodbyes at the main/modern square of the city.
