Description

This interactive online campus tour with our expert local guide, live-streamed from Pasadena, California, will introduce and familiarise you with the prestigious California Institute of Technology, popularly known as Caltech.

Founded in 1891,  the school occupied rented quarters in the Wooster Block — a building that still stands on the southeast corner of the intersection of Fair Oaks and Green Street in its early years. In 1892, the campus was moved to a site bordered by Raymond Avenue to the west and Chestnut Street to the south. In 1910, with the building of Throop Hall by the architects Elmer Grey and Myron Hunt on the present site, the old campus buildings were leased and finally demolished in the 1920s.

Take a walk around in the campus area as your guide gives you some useful tips on getting around. You will get some practical information on the beautiful town of Pasadena, and its proximity to Downtown Los Angeles and the mountains. The guide will also fill you in on how to use public transportation or where to go to enjoy great food, outdoor activities, or off-the-beaten-path local knowledge. Your questions regarding what to expect in Pasadena as a student will be answered.

You will also gain an idea about where to look for off-campus accommodation as well as some important University trivia. For instance, did you know that Robert A. Millikan was Caltech's first Nobel laureate, winning the prize for physics in 1923, during his tenure as Caltech's president (1921-1945)? Or that Einstein was a visiting professor at Caltech for three winter terms — 1931, 1932, and 1933!
