Argentinians are well known for their unique culture of sharing and friendship. Every time when family and friends gather for a special occasion, they also participate in a special ritual of drinking the national tea - Mate.

In this live-streamed Mate masterclass, I will teach you the secrets to brew the best Mate tea. We will also engage in a friendly conversation where I will tell you the meaning of this drink that can be found in almost 90% of Argentinean homes; what is it made of,  what is so special about it that it can be found all over the country, why did it become a symbol of the Argentinians, how do people drink it..and so much more!

Know before you go

  • You will need the following items/ingredients to join this session. However, the availability of these products may vary in different countries. You can look for them on eBay and Amazon:
  • Mate tea (Also called ‘Yerba Mate’)
  • Mate Cup (if you can’t find the special mate cup that we use here, a mug or a plastic glass will also work)
  • A metal/plastic straw with a filter
  • Hot water at 176Fº(80Cº)/ice-cold water/ice-cold lemon/orange/grapefruit juice
  • Additionally, you can also bring sugar, honey, mint leaves, grated coconut, lemon zest, and orange zest. (Don’t worry if you can’t find them. You can also enjoy this experience without brewing a mate yourself.)

We are Cami and Aimé, two tour guides from Argentina. We love to share interesting facts about our country with people from around the world. Even though we are not professional sommeliers or chefs we love our food and wine just as much as any Argentinean. We cook different kinds of local recipes as well as dishes from all over the world, and we are very happy to share all of our tips and secrets with you such as the designs behind Argentinian Empanadas or how to brew the perfect cup of Mate tea. Our personal favourite wine is Malbec, but we are also open to trying other types of wine as well. We will be very happy to share our knowledge about the production of wine in Argentina as well as Argentina's wine drinking culture with you!
