Description

Climb the Cordillera Blanca mountain range to reach the stunning Lake 69. Along the way, enjoy stunning mountainscapes of Mount Chacraraju, Mount Pisco, Mount Yanapaccha and Mount Huascaran. Visit Lake 69, which is one of the 400 lakes that form part of the Huascarán National Park

    Depart from Huaraz at 6.00 am drive along Callejon de Huaylas to the north side.

    • Stop at Yungay city for about 30 minutes to have breakfast.

    • Drive up to reach Lake Chinancocha at 3850 m, stop here to take gorgeous pictures around the amazing green turquoise lake.

    • Continue driving up to Cebollapampa.

    • Trek towards Lake 69, the trail goes through Quenual trees and typical highland plants. Enjoy seeing the giant peaks of Mount Chacraraju at 6112 m, Mount Pisco at 5752 m, Mount Yanapaccha at 5460 m and the majestic Mount Huascaran south peak at 6768 m.

    • Reach Lake 69 at 4500 m, have lunch and enjoy the view and take some amazing scenic pictures.

    • After one hour there, hike down for about 3 hours until the parking site. 

    Finally, come back to Huaraz.

Know before you go

  • The Lake is called 69 due to its localization in the Lakes Register of Inventory Book in the Cordillera Blanca. This lake is one of the most beautiful, besides is ideal for people, who are looking for acclimatization, because after that they can attempt more treks or climb higher elevation.

  • Huaraz  (3100 m) – Yungay city (2550 m) – Cebollapampa  (3900 m) – Lake 69 (4500 m) – Huaraz. Trekking time: 6 hours (ascend & descend) / driving time: 5 hours (go & back).

  • Maximum altitude: 4600 m (Lake 69).

  • Preferred time: April – October.

  • Average temperature: Between 13° C – 23° C.
