Description

Land in Iquitos and transfer to the Amazonian Lodge as you ride in a speedboat down the Apayacu River. Navigate and explore different lakes near the Apayacu River every day, searching for fish, mainly the aggressive Peacock Bass. Feel lucky and celebrate your catch after finding a Peacock Bass because they put up a good fight!

    • Get picked up from your hotel or the airport to start your drive towards the city's main port.

    • From there, travel 4 hours by boat to the Amazonian Lodge, with your Iquitos tour guide, in a protected area along the Apayacu River.

  • Day 2: Kayak Fishing expand_more
    • After breakfast, navigate and explore differents lakes or cochas. If it´s necessary, your meals will be packed for the fishing tour. The cochas along the Apayacu are especially suited for Peacock Bass, and they support good populations of this beautiful fish. These are aggressive feeders and fighting fishes, just like their North American cousins.

  • Day 3: Camping & Fishing expand_more
    • Carry your medium-weight spinning baitcasting or fly fishing tackle and set out in the search for Peacock Bass.

  • Day 4: Peruvian Peacock Bass Fishing expand_more
    • Go on a boat ride in search of the peacock bass, not only one of the most beautiful freshwater fish but also one of the strongest and most acrobatic in the world. If you are lucky, you should expect to battle with fish in the 10-20 pounds (class) and possibly much larger ones! 

  • Day 5: Departure expand_more
    • After breakfast, go on a 4-hour boat ride to the city and transfer to your hotel or airport in Iquitos.

What to bring
  • Cash (dollars or soles under $50 bills, please)

  • Light-weight clothing that is breathable and quickly sheds moisture (not cotton) (Take one set of clothes for each day)

  • Long pants are recommended for jungle walks and insect prevention

  • Long or short sleeve shirts. Long sleeve shirts aren’t as cool but protect better from insects

  • Long socks for insect prevention

  • Hat for sun protection

  • 1 - 2 pairs of comfortable walking or hiking shoes (rubber boots are provided for some excursions)

  • Insect repellent containing 20 - 30 % DEET. Sometimes there will be a few mosquitoes and insects, and there will be many other times. Take a small bottle that you can keep in your pocket when needed

  • Light, inexpensive poncho or raincoat

  • Plastic bag for dirty clothes

  • Sunscreen

  • Camera equipment, high-quality cameras and lenses or compact cameras, whatever suits you

  • Dry bag or other water protection (at least a Ziploc bag)

  • Don’t forget your battery charger

  • Flashlight (headlamps are usually best)

  • Personal toiletries

  • Personal medications

  • Sandals or leisure shoes for around the lodge

  • Binoculars

  • You should bring your own fishing tackle for this excursion, as the tour guide does not supply tackle

Know before you go
  • All meals are taken at the campsite.

  • Begin with a trip downriver on a speedboat (approximately 180 km - 4 hours) from Iquitos to the Apayacu River. Arrive at the village of Sabalillo, where your guides have an exclusive partnership with the indigenous community. From here, you will set out every day to catch some fish, primarily looking for the acrobatic Peacock Bass.

  • In all of the expeditions and excursions, the tour operators work in safe places for all travellers; malaria, dengue and sika have not been reported in any of the areas of operations.

  • This tour is available from 25 June to 20 Nov.
