Go to the north of the city to visit the Historic downtown area of Lima known as El Damero de Pizarro, founded by the Spanish Conquistador, Francisco Pizarro in 1535. In 1991, UNESCO designated this part of town as a World Heritage Site for its more than 680 monuments among colonial houses, palaces, churches, cathedrals, and convents as well as many Moorish-style balconies.
Reach the Historic District and visit the Monastery of San Francisco (Franciscan order monastery) and walk down the underground crypts, known as the catacombs.
