Know before you go
  • Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located at Pinnawala, Kegalle district, in Sabaragamuwa province. It was established in 1975 to shelter and care for the wounded elephants and abandoned baby elephants found in the jungle. The main daily activities in the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage are feeding milk to baby elephants and bathing sessions. Elephants lie down on riverbeds and allow the people who look after them to scrub and clean their body. In the bathing time, visitors can see elephants walk one followed by another, cross the road and go down to the river.
  • Spice Garden smells of cinnamons, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and mace and completely overwhelms the senses. The visitors are provided with an insight into an age-old industry of spice production, which attracted many European and Asian merchants to the ports of ancient Sri Lanka.
  • Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya are about 5.5 km to the west of the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka; it attracts 2 million visitors annually. It is near the Mahaweli River and is renowned for its collection of orchids.
