Also, learn how salt is extracted from this volcanic area dotted with sulphur springs. Afterwards, explore the archaeological remains at the ancient site in Lalibela.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Addis - Mekelle - Afdera expand_more
    • Take the 7 AM flight to Mekelle. 

    • Your Ethiopia tour guide will pick you up at the airport. Then, embark on a drive to Mekelle-Afdera 220km. The spectacular yet inhospitable Danakali Depression begins here.

    • Drive to Afdera via the small village of Eribt.

    • Go swimming in the salt lake and enjoy the hot springs near the lake.

    Set up camp by the lake.

  • Day 2: Afdera - Erta Ale expand_more
    • Start the drive to Afdera-Dodom (70km). 

    • Encounter the salt miners near the lake.

    • Drive to Dodom (at the base of Erta Ale), about 8.5km from Erta Ale, which takes about 3 hours of trekking. 

    • Have an early dinner around 17:00 hrs and trek to Erta Ale at 20:00. Camels transport all the camping materials and some food (sleeping materials like light mattresses and water) to the volcano's rim, where you spend the night watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. Erta Ale ranks as one of the most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia. It is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and a 1km square caldera at its summit.

  • Day 3: Erta Ale - Hamad Ela expand_more
    • Wake up early for an enchanting view of the sunrise.

    • Travel to the north of the crater. 

    • Descend from Erta Ale around 7:00 am.

    • Return to the campsite in Dodom around 9:30 am.

    • After breakfast, it's time to relax. 

    • At 10:30 drive to Hamad Ela (100 km).

    • Enjoy a picnic lunch on the way to the shed. 

    • Reach Hamad Ela around 04:30 pm. Here, you will see lots of camel caravans and behold the sunset look by the shallow salt lake of Assale.

  • Day 4: Hamad Ela - Dallol - Mekelle - Addis Ababa expand_more
    • In the morning, drive to Ragad (Asebo), a salt mining region.

    • Observe the miners breaking the salt from the ground, cutting it into rectangular pieces and loading it on camels.

    • Proceed to Dallol and visit the diverse landscape formed by volcanic activity: Dallol + Lake Assale + salt canon. 

    • Enjoy camel caravans and then drive back to Hamad Ela for lunch.

    • Proceed to Mekele to catch the flight to Addis Ababa at 7 p.m.

  • Day 5: Mekele/Lalibela expand_more
    • Drive on a scenic road to Lalibela.

    • Arrive at your hotel late afternoon and enjoy the sunset from the terrace.

  • Day 6: Lalibela Sites Visit expand_more
    • Begin to explore the 11 rock-hewn churches of the remarkable Southeastern Cluster of churches:

      • Bet Gabriel-Rufael

      • Bet Merkorios

      • Bet Amanual

      • Bet Abba Libanos. 

    • Finally, visit the most famous of all the churches – Bet Giyorgis, a massive monolith in the shape of a cross, which was constructed in honour of St. George, the patron saint of Ethiopia.

    • After lunch, take an afternoon trip to visit the church of Yimrehanne Kristos. The most popular of the churches outside of Lalibela. This church is built in the late-Axumite style, with layers of wood and granite, set in the entrance to a large cavern.

    • After the visit, return to Lalibela.

  • Day 7: Lalibela - Addis Ababa expand_more
    • After lunch, take the flight back to Addis and embark on a city tour in Addis, where you can shop.

    • Enjoy a farewell dinner and coffee ceremony with traditional folklore music for our appreciation.
