The Appian way is called the “Regina viarum” in Latin, which means the queen of the roads or the most important one. It was started in 312 BC during the Republican era and it took one hundred years to be completed. The Appian way was initially built for military purposes but in the following years, it became the best place and most visible spot for richly decorated and expansive tombs and villas with private baths built from Roman wealthy people. Later, Christians created their catacombs by digging some natural hills. Then in the first years of the fourth century AD, the emperor Maxentius built along the road a circus, his palace and the mausoleum of his son Romulus.
