In the Spring, the extensive marshes of Maremma attract Ferruginous Duck, Purple Heron, Glossy Ibis, Black-winged Stilt, Pied Avocet, and such sought-after migrants as Collared Pratincole, Temminck’s and Little Stints, Curlew Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper, and Whimbrel. Both Woodchat and Red-backed Shrikes are common breeders. There even are a few pairs of Lesser Gray Shrike.
Maremma’s other notable species include Montagu’s Harrier, short-toed eagle, stone-curlew, Great Spotted Cuckoo, European bee-eater, European roller, lanner, and red-footed falcon. The majestic Red Kite has been reintroduced and can now be seen gliding over the entire area.
The Apennines are preserved in a series of natural parks, running north to south through Italy. They are famous throughout the world as a model of conservation and environmental protection. The many highlight birds to be seen here include Goshawk, Eurasian Honey-buzzard, Short-toed Eagle, Red-footed Falcon, Wallcreeper, Alpine Accentor, Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush. The vast beech and fir forests are the home of the Black Woodpeckers.
