Know before you go
  • Mount Papandayan is located in the west of the Indonesian island of Java near the city of  Bandung.

  • The landscape around the active stratovolcano is somewhat reminiscent of another planet. The Papandayan volcano reaches a height of 2665 meters. Since the volcano is not too high, a tour is also suitable for inexperienced trekkers.

  • The volcano has erupted several times in the past:

    • August 12, 1772

    • March 11, 1923

    • August 15, 1942

    • November 11, 2002

  • The biggest outbreak occurred in 1772, at least 3,000 people were killed.

  • The Papandayan volcano is located in the village of Sirnajaya in the Garut province. Surrounding cities include  Cisurupan (approx. 9 km away), Garut (approx. 27 km away) or  Bandung (approx. 70 km away).

  • The best way to travel from Bandung to Garut Bus Station is by bus. From Garut you can take another bus called  ELF Cikajang, where you can get off in Cisurupan.

  • The legend of Mount Papandayan

    • The name comes from Sundanese (local language of West Java). And 'Panday' means blacksmith in Sundanese.

    • The story of the Papandayan volcano's naming began with a group of people who heard strange noises as they crossed the volcano. It sounded like someone hitting iron far away. Yes, it almost sounded as if a blacksmith was living on the mountain doing his job.

    • However, since this was unlikely, the group firmly believed that it had to be a ghost. This is how the name Papandayan came about.

    • In the end, it was just the sounds of the Papandayan crater.
