What to bring
  1. Trekking gear:
  • Comfortable and sturdy hiking boots
  • Lightweight, waterproof, and breathable trekking pants and jackets
  • Warm fleece jacket, gloves, and hat for cold evenings
  • Lightweight and quick-drying t-shirts and pants for daytime
  • Good quality socks and thermal inners
  • Sunhat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
  1. Trekking equipment:
  • Backpack (40-50 liters) to carry your essentials
  • Sleeping bag (at least -15 degree Celsius rating)
  • Trekking poles for stability and balance
  • Water bottle (at least 1 liter) and water purification tablets or filter
  • Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries

  • It is also important to pack light and only carry essential items. You can leave non-essential items in Kathmandu hotel storage or with your trekking agency.
Know before you go
  • Trekking experience: The Tamang Heritage Trail trek is a moderate trek that requires a moderate level of physical fitness and prior trekking experience. It is recommended to do some physical preparation and training before the trek.

  • Permits: You need to obtain the necessary permits, including the Langtang National Park entry permit and TIMS card (Trekkers' Information Management System) before starting the trek. You can obtain these permits through a trekking agency or the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu.

  • Best time to go: The best time to go on the Tamang Heritage Trail trek is from March to May and from September to November, when the weather is generally clear, and the views are spectacular. However, the trek can be done throughout the year, depending on your preference.

  • Altitude sickness: The Tamang Heritage Trail trek involves trekking at high altitudes. It is important to acclimatize properly and stay hydrated to prevent altitude sickness. In case of any symptoms of altitude sickness, it is important to inform your guide and descend to a lower altitude immediately.

  • Accommodation and food: The accommodation during the trek is basic teahouses or homestays with shared toilets and bathrooms. The food is usually Nepalese cuisine, including dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), noodles, soups, and snacks. It is recommended to drink only boiled or filtered water during the trek.

  • Tipping culture: Tipping is a common practice in Nepal, and it is customary to tip your trekking guide and porters as a sign of appreciation for their services. It is recommended to tip 10-15% of the total cost of the trekking package.
