Description

Delve into the history of Persian wars by visiting the two important battlefields of Marathon and Thermopylae, where great warriors died in the 5th century B.C. Walk and learn the stories of Leonidas and his 300 soldiers who gave their last battle and where Athenian soldiers were defeated by the Persians to keep Greece free. Later, unwind by capturing photos with the Leonidas statue and visiting Kammena Vourla.

Highlights
  • Explore the Tumulus of the Athenians
  • See the Marathon Battlefield and pay your respects at a prehistoric cemetery
  • Soak in the beautiful views of Marathon Lake
  • Learn about the role of Thermopylae in the Battle of Marathon
  • Capture a photo with the Leonidas statue opposite Kolonos Hill
  • Tour of Marathon and Thermopylae expand_more
    • Meet the tour guide and head from Athens to the sacred plain of Marathon, driving through Attica Highway and Marathon Avenue. This is the course of the original Marathon Race, as you will see by the signs that count each kilometre.
    • Reach the Tumulus of the Athenians; the site portrays courage, bravery and, finally, the victory of the Athenians against the Persians in 490 BCE.
    • Move on to see the Marathon Battlefield, its archaeological museum and a prehistoric cemetery that produces proof of the first civilized presence in this location.
    • Driving by the present city of Marathon, your last stop in this area will be Marathon Lake, on the slopes of Mt Penteli. It is an artificial lake operating as the main water reservoir for Athens. Besides the magnificent view, you see the Marathon Dam, a miracle of engineering, unique because it’s the only one in the world made entirely of Pentelic marble (king of all marbles) used for the Parthenon on Acropolis Hill). Moreover, at the bottom, you will see an excellent modern model of the treasury of the Athenians, which was located in the sanctuary of Delphi.
    • Next, you will be back on board for a drive to Thermopylae. It was here that 10 years after the Battle of Marathon, King Leonidas and his 300 brave Spartans heroically faced the Persian army. In the historical centre, an enjoyable 3D movie will be shown. As if travelling through time, you will feel the presence of heroes who stood their ground for their freedom against a foreign conqueror.
    • To conclude, you will visit the Leonidas statue opposite Kolonos Hill, where the persistent Spartans left their last breath. A place too sacred for words.
    • Head back to Athens, and you will stop at the coastal town of Kammena Vourla, where you will enjoy a relaxing, traditional Greek lunch by the sea. Get to check out the warm springs.
    • And to terminate the tour, you will drive back to Athens safe and sound.
