Description

Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic Games and one of the most famous archaeological sites of the Peloponnese. This 4-hour tour takes you back in time to ancient Olympia as you visit these sites and learn about their history as well as continuing significance in modern times.     • First, visit the archaeological site, where you’ll see the massive temple of Zeus; the largest temple in the Peloponnese and the various buildings erected around it, such as athletic premises used for the preparation and celebration of the Olympic Games, like the training centers of the Gymnasium and Palaestra, administrative buildings  and smaller  monuments. 

    • Then, explore the oldest temple in Olympia: the Temple of Hera . Nowadays, the temple is used as the background for the Olympic flame lighting ceremony. The remaining space inside the site was filled with numerous altars and statues of gods, heroes and Olympic winners dedicated by Greek cities or wealthy individuals, such as the Nike of Paionios. 

    • East of the temples lies the stadium where the Olympic Games were held; we will visit this area.

    • Then, proceed to the nearby museum, where you’ll be able to admire some of the finest pieces of ancient Greek art, such as  the sculptures of the Temple of Zeus, the statue of Nike of Panionios, the statue of Hermes and the infant Dionysus, the bronze collection of ancient armour , the collection of clay vases and figurines.

    • Lastly, we stop at the Olympia market which is located near the museum. Here, you could grab a bite of authentic Greek food and also shop for souvenirs.
