Enter the coastal castle of Modon through a narrow bridge that’s located over a moat and leads to its entrance. The walls in this part of the castle are heavily reinforced and approximately 10 meters tall. In the castle, we first see the Byzantine Gate and the so-called column of Morosini. The last one was found in the so-called shipwreck of the columns, which belonged to an ancient Roman ship. 

We then enter the northern part of the castle through an Ottoman gate. In this part, you can see the Ottoman gunpowder magazine building and the piazza for the Venetian canons. 

Climb a tall bastion that offers a fantastic view of the castle, the modern town of Modon, and the sea, with the island of Sapienza on the horizon. 

Then, we pay a visit to the church of Transformation, which is still used sometimes. We will also see the Venetian triangular gunpowder magazine building. 

Walk southwards and on our way, we see the ruins of two Ottoman hammams as well as the Byzantine church of Saint John, the Theologian. 

Eventually, we arrive at the Southern Venetian gate of San Marco, also called the “Gate to the sea”. From there, we cross a narrow bridge and we head towards the Bourtzi. It’s the most famous monument of the castle, a magnificent tower which is surrounded by the sea, constructed by the Venetians 500 years ago.
