Description

Explore the capital of Messenia province and the southernmost city of Greece.     • Begin by visiting the castle of Kalamata, which offers a breathtaking view of the city and the sea.

    • Pay a visit to Kalograion monastery, famous for its handmade silk scarves.

    • Walk to Ypapanti square, where the cathedral of Kalamata is located.

    • Climb the old city of Kalamata in order to take some photos as you appreciate the traditional architectural landscape of the settlement.

    • Return to Ypapanti square and walk towards the 23rd March Square, making a short stop at a traditional Greek shop for olive oil tasting.

    • Visit the Archaeological Museum and the church of Saint Apostles.

    • Head towards the Museum of the Traditional Greek Costumes, which is located nearby. Pay a visit to the museum, where you can enjoy a great collection of traditional Greek dresses.

    • Stroll towards the central square of Kalamata, crossing the commercial street of the town that’s full of shops and cafes.

    • See the central square and then enter a vehicle to drive towards the railway museum, the only open-air museum of its kind in the whole of Greece.

    • Explore the park and then return to the vehicle to drive back to Ypapanti square, where the tour ends.

  • European Union citizens over the age of 65 have a 50% discount for all archaeological sites and museums.

  • For EU students under the age of 18, the entrance is free to all archaeological sites and museums.

  • Opening hours: Castle of Kalamata 08:30 – 20:00 (Tuesday closed); Archaeological Museum of Kalamata 08:00 – 20:00 (12:30 – 20:00 Tuesday).
