- Pointe du Hoc, where 225 US American Rangers led by Colonel James Earl Rudder had to achieve an impressive and almost impossible mission by climbing the cliffs under fire in order to destroy six 155mm guns. During the American assault of Utah & Omaha beaches on June 6, 1944, the U.S. Army Rangers scaled the 100-foot cliffs, found and destroyed the German artillery pieces that could have fired on the American landing troops at Omaha and Utah beaches. At a high cost of life, these heroes successfully defended against determined German counterattacks.
