Cover the American Landings' key sites on D-Day - Omaha Beach, the US Cemetery, Ranger landings at Pointe du Hoc, Utah Beach, and Ste Mere Eglise and the actions of 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.  Travel in a nine-seater minivan or in your vehicle comfortably. The tour focuses on the overall history of D-Day and the individual stories of the soldiers who landed but can be tailored to specific interests. If you had a family member involved, with a little prior warning, the tour could be tailored to suit their reaction.

    • Pick up anywhere between Cherbourg and Caen
    • Travel to Ste Mere Eglise (45 minutes) to cover paratrooper actions. Option for Airborne Museum in Ste Mere Eglise (ticket price not included)
    • Lunch in Ste Mere Eglise or we can pick up a sandwich and keep going.
    • Visit the Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc, and Omaha Beach.
    • See the US Cemetery - planning to arrive in time for the Flag lowering ceremony at day's end.  Time varies between 16.00 and 17.00 depending on winter or summer opening hours.
    • Tour can be done in reverse order depending on the pickup and drop off point.

  • Pick up beyond Cherbourg/Caen.  This is possible at extra cost - e.g. from Paris or Cruise Terminals at Honfleur or Le Havre
What to bring
  • Layers of clothing, including a top waterproof layer.  Temperatures are generally mild, but it can rain and it can be windy.
  • Shoes for walking - on the beach, gravel paths, etc.
  • Any special dietary food - gluten free is tough in France for example, available in supermarkets but not generally in bakeries, cafes, restaurants.
Know before you go
  • If you want a quick guide before you come, watch The Longest Day movie, and if you want to understand a bit about the paratroopers, then episodes 2 and 3 of Band of Brothers (HBO).
  • Books - The Longest Day by Cornelius Ryan, or D-Day by Antony Beevor.
  • If you stay in France or anywhere but Paris, be aware that it is not a 24 hour culture. Shops generally close by 19.00 or 20.00 and many shops are closed between 12.00 and 14.00 and on Sundays (including supermarkets).  Lots of places also closed on Mondays.
