Set out on this five-day tour of Southern Ethiopia, which includes a visit to Lake Chamo where you will have the chance to discover the crocodile market as well as to see the unique birdlife of the region. En-route the South Omo Valley, you will interact with Mursi, Hamer, and Dassenech tribes with the help of your Ethiopia tour guide. You will also visit the Dorze community and observe their manner of living. All through the drive, you will be accompanied by beautiful views that are a natural part of the Valley.

  • Day1: Addis Ababa - Arba Minch expand_more
    • From Addis Ababa, drive to the Entoto Hills, passing by splendid views of the city. Visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral Church or the St George Cathedral Church on your way to the airport.
    • Fly to Arba Minch in the afternoon and visit Dorze people who are one of the many interesting tribes known for making traditional clothes woven from cotton. Visit a family in the tribe and see making this traditional wear as well as cooking 'Kocho', a unique staple food prepared from a false banana tree.

    Spend the night in a hotel in Arba Minch.

  • Day 2: Arba Minch - Jinka expand_more
    • Enjoy a morning boat trip on Lake Chamo referred to as ’the crocodile market’, near Arba Minch. The lake is rich in wildlife such as hippos & crocodiles as well as a variety of birdlife.
    • Then, depart Arba Minch on a drive towards Jinka, visiting the Konso Tribe and their UNESCO registered villages en-route. Observe their indigenous techniques of terracing their land. 

    Spend the night in a hotel at Jinka.

  • Day 3: Jinka - Mursi - Turmi expand_more
    • Drive to Mursi village in the morning. Mursi are a semi-nomadic tribe that live close to the Omo River, whose women are known for inserting lip-plates in their lower lips. Visit one of their villages and return to Jinka around noon for lunch.
    • In the afternoon you will drive to Turmi, one of the towns in the territory of the Hamer tribe, and visit a Hamer Village. Drive to Turmi.

    Spend the night in a hotel at Turmi.

  • Day 4: Turmi - Dassenech - Dimeka - Turmi expand_more
    • Set out on an excursion to the other side of Omo River to visit another tribe named Dassench. Once you get to the nearby town Omorate, you could use a wooden canoe to cross the river. Spend time exploring the villages and learning about the tribe. Take pictures before returning to Turmi.
    • If it is a market day in Turmi or Dimeka, you could visit the local market early in the afternoon. 

    Spend the night in a hotel at Turmi.

  • Day 5: Turmi - Jinka - Addis Ababa expand_more
    • Drive to Jinka in the morning. Visit a village of Ari Tribe (the tribe that has the highest population among all the 16 tribes of South Omo valley) before transferring to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
    • Once in Addis Ababa, you will visit ‘Mercato’, the largest open-air market in Africa.
    • In the evening you will be our guest in one of the cultural restaurants in Addis Ababa to see a variety of Ethiopian traditional dances while enjoying the country’s most delicious food and drinks. Then you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back home.

What to bring
  • Most places in Ethiopia are free of malaria as they are located in areas above 2000 meters above sea level. However, bring mosquito repellents for your convenience. 
  • While walking outdoors, it's advised that you have sun-blocks on; so you need to bring sun-blocks.
Know before you go
  • Coming to Ethiopia, visitors should have a tourist visa. Regarding how to obtain a visa, please follow the link: https://www.evisa.gov.et/visa-types/tourist-visa/online-tourist-visa
  • Be advised to cover your head (esp. for females) and your body while visiting religious places.
  • Ethiopia has a unique cuisine, the most famous is a flatbread known as ‘injera’ prepared from a gluten-free grain ’teff’ served with a variety of stews and hot sauces.
  • Ethiopia also requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate for travellers aged 9 months or older arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission and for travellers having transited for more than 12 hours through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission
  • The Hamer people are one of the tribes in the southern Omo valley that are said to be masters of body decoration as they use different metallic materials and natural colours from clay and chalk for decoration. They have an interesting cultural ritual called ‘bull jumping’ that shows coming-of-age for their boys into their adulthood. If you are lucky you might see one of these rituals.

The following information is concerning precautions travellers should take while coming to Ethiopia in connection with Covid-19:

  • All passengers travelling to Ethiopia must present a negative PCR test certificate for COVID-19 before boarding a flight. The certificate validity shouldn’t exceed 120 hours on arrival from the date sample is given.
  • Children less than or equal to 12 years of age are exempted from the PCR test certificate requirement.
  • There shall be no COVID-19 test to be done on arrival at Addis Ababa. 
  • Rapid diagnostic test (RDT antibody test) certificate is not acceptable.
  • The above requirement does not apply to transit passengers.
