The falls are formed by the waters of the Iguaçu River, which means big water in Tupi-Guarani language (Y - "water", "river" and guasu or guaçu - "big"). The river runs 1,320 km (approx. 820 mi) westwards and reaches its mouth in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, bordering Paraguay and Argentina.
The Iguaçu River rises in eastern Curitiba, near the coastal mountain chain called the Serra do Mar, and flows into the Paraná River, in the La Plata Basin, 90 meters above sea level.
The Falls date from about 150 million years ago, boasting around 275 waterfalls nowadays.
The Iguassu Falls is 82 meters high (approx. 269 ft) and 2,700 meters long (approx. 1.5 mi).
The walking tour will be approx. 1800 meters or 1.2 mi.
