GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS

Happiness is a place.

Lhuntse

The tiny town of Lhuntse sits in one of Bhutan’s most isolated and hence scenically pristine regions. It’s crowned by the glorious edifices of the Lhuntse Dzong, which tower in trademark Bhutanese white and brown stone and mortar over the breath-taking landscapes of the Kuri Chhu valley below. All around, are medleys of steep cliffs and fir forests cascading down from Himalayan peaks peppered with villages and dynastic homes, their roots deep in the kingly histories of the Kurtoe monarchs (now the kings and queens of Bhutan as a whole). Lhuntse tour guides today help visit several of the sacred pilgrimage sites in this ancient and earthy province, revealing the area’s cultural prowess along the way. These range from showing visitors the traditional art of fabric weaving that’s mastered at places like Khoma and classic pottery making at Gangzur, to attending the 3 day tsechu in the winter months, all the while moving between untrodden summits that lead up to the snow-stained tips on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau.
