Pompeii was a town that disappeared from the maps and from people’s memories as it got completely buried under the ashes erupted by the volcano in 79 AD. That dramatic day, in a matter of few hours, stopped the lives of an entire bustling city to only come unearthed many centuries later. These ruins give an incredible picture of ancient Romans’ daily life and their original urban setting: homes, shops, frescoes, thermal baths, mosaics and much more. Included in this tour there is a stop to a Cameos and Corals workshop, to learn more about this ancient art-craft, for which the Neapolitan school is still considered of great importance. Cameos in particular are carved sea shells representing scenes of mythological deities. Lunch in a local restaurant. Continue this tour to the top of for a short hike to the volcano’s crater. The national park of Mt. Vesuvius is listed as UNESCO biosphere reserve and it is composed by the caldera of Mt. Somma and the Grand Cone of Mt. Vesuvius. In other words, a mountain into another mountain, aka the pre-existing one got its top blown away forming a new one. There is a long history of studies on the colonization of lava by vegetation throughout different epochs. The traditional agricultural areas are diverse in fruit, vines and flowers. It became sadly famous for its eruptions in 79 AD, the deadliest of recent history. Last eruption took place in 1944, in the middle of WWII and today it is considered a dormant volcano.
