The itinerary

1
Day 01

Trek through Ait Mizane Valley to Toubkal Refuge

  • Meet your tour guide at Jamma El-Fena, or any other agreed-upon location in Marrakech, have breakfast, and drive to Imlil village.
  • Begin the trek and head along the Ait Mizane Valley. First, pass Aremd village and then continue to the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch.
  • Continue east, crossing the flood plains, as the route follows mule tracks and climbs into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. After crossing the river, arrive at the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims. From here, the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline in winter and on to the Toubkal Refuge (3207 m), where you will stop for the night.

(4 to 5 hours walking; height difference 1507 m between Imlil and Toubkal hut.)

2
Day 02

Summit Jebel Toubkal and descend to Imlil

  • Wake up early in the morning and attempt the summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The route takes you up the south cirque, crossing the stream above the refuge. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the scree and the altitude will make the ascent quite difficult. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. When you reach the summit, you will see breathtaking vistas across the surrounding landscape, with unrestricted views in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas, north and south of the Anti-Atlas, and the Sahara. Afterwards, retrace your steps back to the refuge and have lunch.
  • Head back towards Imlil.

(9 to 10 hours walk; height difference is 960 m between the refuge and Toubkal peak.)
