Description
Mount Toubkal is the highest mountain in North Africa. The hike to the summit is challenging but requires no mountaineering experience and the panoramic view from the summit makes the hard work worthwhile. This trek is a perfect combination of 4 days 3-night on the western high Atlas. Begin by visiting several Berber villages and hike over high mountain passes to acclimatize with the altitude before reaching the summit on the fourth day.
Itinerary
-
Day 1 : Marrakech to Agersioual
- Transfer from Marrakech to Agersioual to meet the team of guide, cook and muleteers.
- Set off on the first day which will be an acclimatisation trek in the Ouirgane National Park. The terrain here is gentler with copper green soil and juniper trees.
Overnight in Gite in a Berber Village of Tizian.
Approx. 4-5 hrs walking time.
-
Day 2 : Azzaden Valley
- Head up and out of the valley after breakfast. Traverse over to the stunning Azzaden Valley. The views open up with a rushing mountain stream surrounded by lush walnut groves leading up towards Toubkal and her sister peaks at the head of the Valley.
Overnight in a village Gite or camping.
Approx. 7 hours walking.
-
Day 3 : Toubkal Refuge
- Take on a fairly stiff climb out of the Azzadene Valley to the Toubkal Refuge past the Ighouliden waterfalls and over the Aguelzim Mountain pass at 3,560m. Lunch will be served with spectacular views over the Atlas Mountain Range.
Overnight in the Toubkal Refuge (Niltner Hut) at 3,200m. Here you will likely be sharing a bunk room with other trekkers tackling Toubkal the next morning.
Approx. 7 hours walking.
-
Day 4 : Summit Day
- Get up early for the climb to Toubkal Summit (4,167m) from where, clouds allowing, you will get wonderful views over the Atlas Range and the Sahara Desert.
- Make your long way back down past the refuge and the well-worn path back to Imlil. This is a fairly long day with 8-9 hours of trekking, involving 900 m up then almost 2,500m back down to Imlil before a transfer back to Marrakech.
