Day 01

Marrakech to Imlil and Trek to Toubkal Refuge

  • Meet at the famous Jamaa El Fna, or enjoy pickup from your hotel if it is accessible by car.
  • Head towards the High Atlas Mountains and enjoy a scenic drive through the mountains.
  • Arrive at Imlil Village and meet your local guide.
  • Begin the adventure along the Mizane Valley, first towards the village of Aremd, and then on to Sidi Chamarouch.
  • Continue east and cross the flood plains, following mule tracks up to the high rocky cliffs above the valley.
  • Cross the river and reach the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch.
  • Reach the village beside a small waterfall, a jumbled cluster of houses that seem to melt together into an anarchic mass.
  • Continue climbing steadily, snaking and zigzagging up to the snowline and the Toukbal Refuge (3206 m).

Day 02

Summit Jebel Toubkal and Return to the Refuge

  • Start early in the morning for the summit of Jebel Toukbal, the highest peak in North Africa.
  • Follow the route up to the South Cirque and cross the stream above the refuge.
  • Head across the mountain's numerous scree fields, passing an endless carpet of boulders and rocks. The walk is relatively straightforward, but the scree and altitude make some sections difficult.
  • Enjoy the views along the way, which make the journey worthwhile.
  • After cresting the ridgeline, reach the plateau. From there, it is a short walk to the summit, where the vistas across the surrounding landscape are quite breathtaking.
  • Enjoy unrestricted views in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north, and south to the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara.
  • Trek back down the mountain and return to the hut for your second night's stay.
