When Vesuvius erupted on 24 August AD 79, it engulfed the two flourishing Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as the wealthy villages of Oplontis and Stabiae.
The vast expanse of the villas at Stabiae and Oplontis contrasts with the smaller remains of the farming resort, Villa Regina, at Boscoreale, which specialized in the production of vines. At Boscoreale, next to the villa, there is an Antiquarium presenting artifacts from all the Vesuvian archaeological sites, findings related to the local flora and fauna, a collection of objects from ancient agricultural life, food such as the typical carbonized loaves of bread, cosmetics, and health remedies.
