The historic maritime town of Genoa is the capital of the Region of Liguria in northern Italy, notorious for being both the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and the gateway to the Italian Riviera.
Old meets new in this quintessentially Italian place. Genoa’s tall, green-shuttered buildings with terracotta roofs are crammed into the hillside paths directly alongside beautiful hanging gardens, historic churches and the remnants of Genoa’s old town walls. The historic port exists alongside a brand new dockside area designed by a local architect Renzo Piano, replete with panoramic elevator and glass biosphere. The waterfront is home to luxury yachts and traditional fishing boats alike and is a favourite night-time spot amongst locals. In 2004, Genoa was voted European Capital of Culture and it’s easy to see why as the fascinating museums and galleries will take days to do full justice.
Genoa is currently experiencing a surge in visitors. Home to a pleasant mild climate, one of Europe’s largest aquariums, incredible shopping boutiques and some of the best seafood in Italy, it is not easy to be impervious to Genoa’s charm!
